Overview

This listing pairs a Yellow Watchman Goby with a compatible pistol shrimp (typically an Alpheus species), offering the classic goby-shrimp symbiotic relationship ready to establish in a new tank. The shrimp digs and maintains a shared burrow while the nearly blind shrimp relies on the goby's tail-flick warning signals to know when to retreat from danger.

Both animals benefit from this arrangement, and watching the partnership develop — the shrimp constantly maintaining the burrow entrance while the goby stands guard — is one of the more genuinely interesting behavioural displays available in a reef tank.

This pairing is ideal for keepers wanting to observe natural symbiotic behaviour without needing to source and introduce the goby and shrimp separately and hope they pair up on their own.

Compatibility

Both the goby and shrimp in this pairing are entirely peaceful and reef safe, posing no risk to corals or other invertebrates. They are not aggressive toward other fish, though the goby can occasionally be nipped or bullied by more boisterous tankmates, so avoid aggressive damsels or triggers in a small tank.

The pair should be introduced to the tank together or in close succession to encourage bonding, ideally into a tank with a fine sand bed for the shrimp to burrow into.

Health & quarantine

Both animals are generally hardy, though the goby can jump if startled, so a secure lid is important, and the pistol shrimp should be acclimated carefully given its sensitivity to rapid salinity or temperature changes. A standard quarantine period of two to four weeks for the goby is recommended, with a slow drip acclimation for the shrimp.
