Overview

The Yellow Watchman Goby is a small, hardy, bright-yellow goby best known for forming a symbiotic partnership with pistol shrimp, sharing a burrow the shrimp digs and maintains while the goby stands guard and signals danger with tail flicks. It's an easy, engaging fish for a huge range of tank sizes.

Even without a shrimp partner it does perfectly well on its own, digging or occupying a burrow among the rockwork and sand, and is one of the most reliable, low-maintenance gobies available for reef tanks.

Its small size, calm temperament, and full reef safety make it an excellent choice for nano to medium tanks and for keepers wanting a fish that adds behaviour and interest without any aggression risk.

Compatibility

Yellow Watchman Gobies are entirely peaceful and reef safe, ignoring corals, clams and other invertebrates. They can be kept with pistol shrimp (most commonly Alpheus species) to form a classic goby-shrimp pair, or kept alone without issue.

They are not aggressive toward other fish, though they can occasionally be nipped or bullied by more boisterous tankmates, so avoid pairing with aggressive damsels or triggers in a small tank.

Health & quarantine

This is a hardy, adaptable species with few specific health issues, though like most gobies it can jump given the chance, so a tight-fitting lid or covered overflow is essential. A standard quarantine period of two to four weeks is recommended as general good practice, though this species tends to ship and acclimate well compared to more delicate reef fish.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a pistol shrimp for a Yellow Watchman Goby?
No, it does perfectly fine on its own, though pairing with a pistol shrimp gives you the classic symbiotic burrow-sharing behaviour this species is known for.
Will a Yellow Watchman Goby jump out of my tank?
It can, especially if startled — a well-fitted lid or covered overflow is recommended.
Is the Yellow Watchman Goby reef safe?
Yes, fully reef safe with corals, clams and other invertebrates.
What size tank does it need?
As small as 100 litres works well given its small size and sand-dwelling habits.
What sand type is best for a Yellow Watchman Goby?
A fine to medium sand bed at least a few centimetres deep, which it will use for burrowing and rearranging.
