Yellow Mimic Tang (Juvenile)

Overview

This listing is the bright yellow juvenile colour phase of the Mimic Tang, in which the young fish closely mimics the Lemonpeel Angelfish (Centropyge flavissima) in both colour and general body shape, likely as a defensive strategy to blend into angelfish territory and avoid predation. It's a genuinely striking small fish in this phase, often mistaken for a dwarf angel by casual observers.

As the fish matures it will gradually lose this bright yellow mimicry and shift toward the duller brown-orange adult colouration typical of the species, along with substantial growth in size — a transformation that surprises many first-time buyers expecting the yellow colouration to be permanent.

Buyers should plan for both the eventual loss of the yellow juvenile colour and the considerably larger adult tank requirements before purchasing this fish in its juvenile phase.

Compatibility

In its juvenile phase this fish may be mistaken for a dwarf angel by true angelfish, occasionally triggering territorial responses from actual Centropyge species sharing the tank. As it matures and loses the mimic colouration, this risk diminishes, though general tang-to-tang aggression should still be considered with other surgeonfish.

This species is fully reef safe and won't bother corals or invertebrates at any life stage.

Health & quarantine

As with other Acanthurus tangs, this species is susceptible to marine ich, and a minimum four-week quarantine is recommended regardless of the juvenile's small size. Good water flow and a varied algae-based diet support healthy growth through the transition to adult colouration.
