Overview

The Sohal Tang is a large, powerfully built surgeonfish with bold blue-and-white striping over a dark body and an orange-edged tail, native to the Red Sea and surrounding waters. It's one of the largest and most aggressive tangs commonly kept in the hobby, reaching sizes that require a genuinely large aquarium.

It is a striking, confident centrepiece fish for keepers with the tank size to match, but its territorial nature toward other tangs and even some unrelated fish means stocking order and tank real estate matter more with this species than almost any other tang.

Given adequate space this is a hardy, long-lived fish, but it is not suited to anything but a large, well-established system with strong filtration and flow.

Compatibility

Sohal Tangs are among the more aggressive tangs in the hobby and will often attack other tangs and surgeonfish, particularly if introduced after the Sohal has already established territory. Best practice is to add it last, into a large tank, or keep it as the sole tang species. It can also be assertive toward other bold or similarly shaped fish.

It is fully reef safe with corals and invertebrates, posing no threat to sessile reef life.

Health & quarantine

As with other large Acanthurus tangs, a minimum four-week quarantine is recommended, with attention to ich symptoms and overall condition. This species is generally hardy once established in adequate space, but poor water quality, insufficient flow, or an undersized tank will quickly lead to stress, aggression, and increased disease susceptibility.

Frequently asked questions

How big does a Sohal Tang get?
Up to around 40cm, making it one of the largest commonly kept tangs and requiring a very large aquarium.
Is the Sohal Tang aggressive?
Yes, it's one of the more aggressive tangs available and will often attack other tangs, especially if they're introduced after it has already settled in.
What tank size does a Sohal Tang need?
At least 800 litres given its adult size and territorial behaviour, with a larger tank strongly preferred.
Is the Sohal Tang reef safe?
Yes, it's herbivorous and won't bother corals or invertebrates.
Can I keep a Sohal Tang with other tangs?
Only in a very large tank, and ideally by adding the Sohal last so it doesn't view the tank as its already-established territory.
