Overview

The Scribbled Angel is a striking mid-sized angelfish native to Australian waters, named for the fine dark pen-scribble markings across its yellow flanks, set against a blue-black head and tail. It's a standout centrepiece fish for anyone wanting an Australian native species with real visual impact.

Unlike the smaller dwarf angels, this is a true "angelfish" in the Chaetodontoplus genus and needs meaningfully more swimming room and a longer settling-in period, but it tends to be hardier and less prone to the chronic health issues seen in some other large angels once established.

It does best purchased as a healthy, well-fed specimen from a dealer who has already got it eating confidently, since wild-caught individuals can take time to transition onto prepared foods.

Compatibility

Scribbled Angels can be territorial toward other angelfish, particularly similarly sized or shaped species, and should generally be the only large angel in the tank unless the aquarium is very large. They are usually fine with tangs, wrasses, clownfish, and other community reef fish.

Reef compatibility is inconsistent — many individuals leave stony coral alone, but sponges, LPS, zoanthids, and clam mantles are at some risk, so this species suits a fish-heavy or soft-coral-leaning reef more than an SPS-dominated tank.

Health & quarantine

As with most large marine angelfish, quarantine of at least four weeks is strongly recommended, with close attention to appetite and breathing rate in the first fortnight. This species can be prone to bacterial and parasitic issues if stressed or underfed during transition, so buying from a supplier who has confirmed the fish is eating well is worth the extra care. Once established and eating a varied diet it is a reasonably resilient, long-lived aquarium fish.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Scribbled Angel reef safe?
It's rated reef safe with caution — many individuals leave stony coral alone, but sponges, LPS and clam mantles are at risk from some individuals.
How big does a Scribbled Angel get?
Around 20cm at full adult size, so it needs a genuinely large tank, not just a nominally 'big enough' one.
Can I keep a Scribbled Angel with other angelfish?
Only in a very large tank with careful introduction order — it will generally not tolerate another large angelfish in a modest-sized system.
Is the Scribbled Angel hard to feed?
It can be selective early on, favouring meaty frozen foods, but usually transitions to a full varied diet including nori and pellets within a couple of weeks.
Is this species Australian native?
Yes, it's found across northern Australian waters and the wider Indo-West Pacific.
