About this fishWhat do these mean?
Overview
The Red Sea Sailfin Tang is a large, visually spectacular surgeonfish with an intricate pattern of fine spots and stripes across a tall, sail-like dorsal and anal fin, closely related to the more commonly available Pacific Sailfin Tang but generally considered a more premium, striking colour form. Its impressive finnage and pattern make it a genuine showpiece for a large reef display.
It shares the general care requirements of other Zebrasoma tangs but grows notably larger, meaning it needs a genuinely spacious tank with strong water flow to accommodate both its size and the display of its expansive fins.
Given adequate room, it's a hardy, long-lived tang, but its large adult size and premium price mean it's best suited to keepers planning a large, dedicated system from the outset.
Compatibility
Red Sea Sailfin Tangs can be territorial toward other tangs, particularly similarly shaped Zebrasoma species, so care with stocking order and tank size matters if keeping multiple tangs. They're generally peaceful with unrelated community fish.
This species is fully reef safe and won't bother corals, clams, or invertebrates.
Health & quarantine
A minimum four-week quarantine is recommended given general Acanthuridae susceptibility to marine ich, with attention to appetite and breathing in the first two weeks. Strong water flow and stable water quality are especially important given this species' large size and fin surface area.
