Overview

The Powder Brown Tang is a hardy, attractive surgeonfish with a soft brown-grey body, a bold white patch below the eye, and a striking yellow dorsal accent, giving it more visual interest than its plain common name suggests. It's closely related to the Powder Blue Tang but is considerably more forgiving and better suited to home aquariums.

It needs a large tank with strong water flow and swimming space to do well long-term, being an active, near-constantly swimming species in the wild. Given adequate space and diet it's one of the more reliable medium-to-large tangs available.

As with all Acanthurus tangs, quarantine and a stable, mature system are important, but this species is noticeably less prone to stress-related illness than its close relative the Powder Blue.

Compatibility

Powder Brown Tangs can be aggressive toward other tangs, especially other Acanthurus species or fish of similar body shape and colour, so a large tank and careful introduction order matter if multiple tangs are planned. They are generally peaceful with non-tang community fish, clownfish, and gobies.

They are fully reef safe and won't bother corals, clams, or reef invertebrates.

Health & quarantine

This species is more disease-resistant than many other Acanthurus tangs but is still susceptible to marine ich, particularly if stressed or kept in insufficient space. A minimum four-week quarantine is recommended, along with strong, consistent water quality and high dissolved oxygen from good flow. A varied, algae-rich diet supports immune health and reduces stress-related outbreaks.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Powder Brown Tang easier than the Powder Blue Tang?
Generally yes — it's noticeably hardier and less prone to stress-related disease, while offering a similar look and size.
How big of a tank does a Powder Brown Tang need?
At least 500 litres given its adult size and need for open swimming space.
Is the Powder Brown Tang reef safe?
Yes, it's a herbivorous grazer and won't touch corals or invertebrates.
Can I keep a Powder Brown Tang with a Powder Blue Tang?
Not recommended in most home tanks — they're similar enough in shape and niche that conflict is likely unless the tank is very large.
What's the white patch below the eye on this fish?
That's a natural marking characteristic of the species, not a sign of illness — it should be a clean, solid white without cloudiness or fuzziness.
