Overview

The Mystery Wrasse is a strikingly patterned, relatively rare wrasse with a vivid purple-to-pink body accented by orange fin edging and a distinctive dark eye-spot near the tail. Its collection from deeper, less accessible reef habitats than many other wrasses contributes to its higher price and premium status in the trade.

It's a hardy, adaptable species once established, generally settling well into a reef tank and adding vivid colour to the middle and lower water column without the aggression common in some other wrasses.

Given its collection depth, buyers should ensure the specific fish is well acclimated and feeding confidently before purchase, though established individuals tend to be reasonably resilient long-term aquarium fish.

Compatibility

Mystery Wrasses are peaceful and fully reef safe, ignoring corals and invertebrates. They generally coexist well with other peaceful to semi-aggressive community fish and rarely show aggression themselves.

They can occasionally be territorial toward other similarly shaped small wrasses in a smaller tank, so some care with tankmate selection is worthwhile.

Health & quarantine

Given its deeper collection origin, this species can benefit from a somewhat longer, more careful acclimation period than typical shallow-reef wrasses. A minimum four-week quarantine is recommended, and like most wrasses it's a capable jumper, so a secure lid is essential.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Mystery Wrasse expensive?
It's collected from deeper, less accessible reef habitats than many other wrasses, which limits supply and drives up its price.
Is the Mystery Wrasse reef safe?
Yes, fully reef safe with corals and invertebrates.
How big does a Mystery Wrasse get?
Up to around 10cm, a manageable size for a medium reef tank.
Does a Mystery Wrasse need a sand bed?
It can benefit from soft sand or rubble to retreat into at night or when startled, though it's less dependent on this than some other wrasses.
Is the Mystery Wrasse aggressive?
Generally peaceful, though it can show mild territoriality toward other similarly shaped small wrasses in a smaller tank.
