Overview

The Lori Anthias is a delicately coloured deepwater anthias with a pale pink-to-lavender body and subtle yellow highlights, less commonly available than shallow-reef anthias species due to its more specialised collection depth. Because it's collected from deeper water, it can face greater decompression-related stress during collection and shipping than typical shallow-water anthias.

It shares the general planktivorous feeding habits of the anthias group but tends to be more reclusive and slower to settle than shallow-water species, often taking longer to feel secure and start feeding confidently in a new tank.

Given its deepwater origin, it does best in a stable, mature tank with subdued lighting and plenty of structure to retreat to, making it a species best suited to experienced anthias keepers.

Compatibility

Lori Anthias are peaceful and reef safe, ignoring corals and invertebrates entirely. They can be kept singly or, where sourcing allows, in a small group, though consistent group availability is less reliable than for more common anthias species.

Avoid pairing with boisterous or fast-feeding tankmates that could outcompete this more retiring species for food.

Health & quarantine

This species carries elevated risk due to its deepwater collection origin, and buyers should specifically ask suppliers about decompression handling and the fish's feeding status before purchase. A minimum four-week quarantine with careful feeding monitoring is strongly recommended, and new arrivals should be watched closely in the first week to confirm they are eating.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Lori Anthias considered advanced?
It's a deepwater species that experiences more stress during collection and shipping than typical shallow-reef anthias, and can be slower to settle and feed confidently.
What should I ask before buying a Lori Anthias?
Confirm the supplier's decompression handling process and that the specific fish is already eating well.
Is the Lori Anthias reef safe?
Yes, fully reef safe with corals and invertebrates.
How often should I feed a Lori Anthias?
Multiple small feedings a day, given its fast metabolism and planktivorous feeding habits.
What tank conditions suit a Lori Anthias?
A stable, mature tank with subdued lighting and plenty of structure to retreat to works best given its deepwater origin.
