About this fishWhat do these mean?
Overview
The Lavender Tang is a soft brown-grey surgeonfish with a subtle lavender-blue sheen and fine dark speckling, offering a more understated look than some of the flashier tangs. It's a solid, reliable algae grazer that adapts well to a range of tank sizes given adequate swimming room.
As with all Acanthurus tangs it needs strong water flow, established rockwork, and a diet centred on marine algae to thrive long-term, doing best in a mature, well-established system.
It's a good mid-difficulty option for keepers wanting an active, hardy tang without the more demanding requirements of species like the Powder Blue Tang.
Compatibility
Lavender Tangs can be territorial toward other tangs, particularly similarly shaped Acanthurus species, so care with stocking order matters in tanks with multiple surgeonfish. They're generally peaceful with unrelated community fish.
This species is fully reef safe and won't bother corals, clams, or invertebrates.
Health & quarantine
A minimum four-week quarantine is recommended given general Acanthurus susceptibility to marine ich, with attention to appetite and breathing in the first two weeks. Strong water flow and stable water quality support long-term health, and a varied algae-rich diet helps maintain condition.
