Overview

Klein's Butterflyfish is a soft yellow-brown butterflyfish with a subtly darker band through the eye and gently fading colouration toward the tail, generally considered one of the hardier and more adaptable butterflyfish available. It tends to transition onto prepared foods more readily than many other Chaetodon species, making it a reasonable entry point for keepers wanting to try a butterflyfish.

Its calm, unhurried nature and manageable adult size make it a good fit for a peaceful community reef tank, though as with most butterflyfish, individual behaviour toward coral can vary.

Given its relative hardiness among butterflyfish, it's often recommended as one of the safer choices in the family for keepers new to this group, though reef risk should still be taken seriously.

Compatibility

Klein's Butterflyfish are peaceful toward other fish and generally coexist well with a wide range of community tankmates, including tangs, wrasses, and gobies. They can occasionally show mild territoriality toward other butterflyfish of similar size and shape.

Reef compatibility is inconsistent — many individuals leave stony coral alone, but some will nip at soft coral polyps, zoanthids, or clam mantles, so this species is rated reef safe with caution rather than fully safe.

Health & quarantine

This species tends to be one of the easier butterflyfish to acclimate, generally transitioning onto prepared foods within the first week or two. A minimum four-week quarantine is still recommended, with attention to appetite in the first week to confirm the fish is feeding well.
