Overview

The Helfrichi Goby is a striking, brightly coloured watchman-type goby with a lavender-blue body dotted with orange spots, making it one of the more visually appealing gobies in the shrimp-goby group. Like its relatives, it forms a burrow-sharing partnership with pistol shrimp when available.

It's a little more retiring than the common Yellow Watchman Goby and can take longer to settle and become confident in a new tank, but it's just as peaceful and fully reef safe once established.

Its colour and interesting symbiotic behaviour make it a popular choice for keepers wanting something a bit different from the more commonly available shrimp gobies.

Compatibility

Helfrichi Gobies are entirely peaceful and reef safe, ignoring corals, clams, and invertebrates. They pair naturally with pistol shrimp such as Alpheus species to share a burrow, though they will also do fine unpaired.

Avoid housing with boisterous or aggressive tankmates that might bully or outcompete this relatively shy species for food and territory.

Health & quarantine

This species can take longer than some other gobies to settle and start eating confidently, so patience during the first one to two weeks is important. Quarantine of two to four weeks is recommended, and a secure lid is essential as with all burrowing gobies, since they can jump when startled.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Helfrichi Goby need a pistol shrimp?
No, it does fine without one, though pairing with a compatible pistol shrimp gives you the classic burrow-sharing partnership.
Is the Helfrichi Goby shy?
It tends to be a bit more retiring than common watchman gobies, especially in the first few weeks after introduction, but usually gains confidence over time.
Is the Helfrichi Goby reef safe?
Yes, fully reef safe with corals and invertebrates.
What tank size suits a Helfrichi Goby?
150 litres is a reasonable minimum given its small size, with a fine sand bed for burrowing.
Will a Helfrichi Goby jump out of the tank?
It can if startled, so a secure lid or covered overflow is recommended.
