Overview

The Gold Rim Tang is a sleek, dark grey-brown surgeonfish with a fine gold-orange trim around the dorsal, anal, and tail fins, giving it a subtle but attractive accent against its otherwise understated body colour. It's closely related to the Powder Brown and Powder Blue Tangs but tends to be a bit hardier and more adaptable than either.

As with all Acanthurus species it needs strong water flow, open swimming space, and a diet centred on marine algae, doing best in a well-established tank rather than a newly cycled one.

It's a solid mid-difficulty tang option for keepers wanting an active, attractive surgeonfish without taking on the more demanding care requirements of species like the Powder Blue.

Compatibility

Gold Rim Tangs can be territorial toward other tangs, particularly similarly shaped Acanthurus species, so care with stocking order matters in tanks with multiple surgeonfish. They are generally peaceful toward unrelated community fish.

This species is fully reef safe and won't bother corals, clams, or invertebrates.

Health & quarantine

A minimum four-week quarantine is recommended given general Acanthurus susceptibility to marine ich, with attention to appetite and breathing in the first two weeks. Strong, stable water quality and good flow support long-term health, and a varied algae-rich diet helps maintain condition and immune resilience.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Gold Rim Tang the same as the Powder Brown Tang?
They're closely related and similar in care, but the Gold Rim Tang has a subtler gold fin trim rather than the Powder Brown's white facial patch.
How big does a Gold Rim Tang get?
Around 21cm as an adult, needing a large, well-established tank.
Is the Gold Rim Tang reef safe?
Yes, it's herbivorous and won't touch corals or invertebrates.
Is the Gold Rim Tang easier than the Powder Blue Tang?
Generally yes, it tends to be hardier and more adaptable, though it still needs strong water quality and a large tank.
Can I keep a Gold Rim Tang with other tangs?
With care — avoid other similarly shaped Acanthurus species in a modest tank.
