Overview

The Flame Angel is one of the most popular dwarf angelfish in the hobby, with a vivid red-orange body marked by dark vertical bars and blue-tipped fins, making it a genuine standout in any reef display. It's a hardy, confident feeder that tends to acclimate well, contributing to its status as one of the go-to choices for a first dwarf angel.

Its manageable adult size and striking, reliable colouration make it a favourite for keepers wanting real visual impact without the demands of a larger angelfish species.

As with all dwarf angels, individual reef compatibility varies, so behaviour with corals should be monitored after introduction rather than assumed to be entirely safe.

Compatibility

Flame Angels can be territorial toward other dwarf angels, especially similarly shaped or coloured species, and are best kept as the only pygmy angel in small to medium tanks. They are generally peaceful with unrelated community fish, wrasses, and gobies.

Most individuals leave stony coral alone, but some will pick at LPS, zoanthids, or clam mantles, so this species is rated reef safe with caution rather than fully safe.

Health & quarantine

This is one of the hardier dwarf angels, generally tolerating quarantine and acclimation well, though the standard minimum four-week quarantine with observation for ich and velvet symptoms is still recommended. New arrivals usually start feeding within a few days, faster than many other angelfish species.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Flame Angel a good beginner angelfish?
Yes, it's one of the hardier and more confident-feeding dwarf angels, making it a top recommendation for a first Centropyge.
Is the Flame Angel reef safe?
Rated reef safe with caution — most leave stony coral alone but some individuals nip at LPS, zoanthids or clam mantles.
Can I keep two Flame Angels together?
Only in a large tank with plenty of rock, ideally as an established pair — two unrelated individuals in a small tank will often fight.
What tank size does a Flame Angel need?
200 litres is a reasonable minimum given its compact adult size.
How fast does a Flame Angel start eating in a new tank?
Usually within a few days, faster than many other angelfish species, making it a relatively easy transition.
