Overview

The Fire Goby, also called the Firefish, is a slender, elegant dartfish with a white-to-pale-orange front half fading into deep red toward an elongated, whip-like dorsal fin. It's one of the most popular reef fish in the hobby thanks to its peaceful nature, small size, and striking colour.

It hovers gracefully above rockwork picking plankton from the water column, retreating instantly into a burrow or crevice at the first hint of danger. This shyness is a defining trait of the species and should be planned for when choosing tankmates.

Fire Gobies are reef safe, easy to feed, and well suited to nano and medium tanks alike, making them one of the best all-round beginner fish for a peaceful reef community.

Compatibility

Fire Gobies are extremely peaceful and can be bullied or outcompeted for food by boisterous or aggressive tankmates, so they do best with other calm, similarly non-aggressive fish. They are fully reef safe and ignore corals and invertebrates entirely.

Two Fire Gobies can be kept together if introduced at the same time as a pair, but unrelated individuals added separately may fight, sometimes seriously, since they can be territorial toward their own species and similar-looking dartfish.

Health & quarantine

This species is generally hardy but is a notorious jumper, especially when startled — a secure, gap-free lid is essential. A minimum two-to-four-week quarantine is recommended, and new arrivals should be given plenty of hiding spots and a calm tank to reduce the stress that can trigger jumping attempts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep two Fire Gobies together?
Yes, if introduced together as a pair — adding a second one later to an established individual can lead to aggression.
Is the Fire Goby reef safe?
Yes, fully reef safe with corals and all invertebrates.
Why does my Fire Goby keep hiding?
This is completely normal behaviour — they retreat into a burrow at any disturbance and are naturally a shy, cautious species.
Will a Fire Goby jump out of my tank?
It's one of the more prone-to-jumping reef fish, so a secure, gap-free lid is essential.
What tank size does a Fire Goby need?
As small as 100 litres works well given its small size and calm swimming habits.
