Overview

The Green Chromis is one of the most popular and widely available schooling reef fish, with a shimmering pale green-to-blue body that catches the light beautifully as a group moves together through the tank. It's an extremely hardy, easygoing species that suits a huge range of tank sizes and experience levels.

Like other chromis it's naturally a shoaling fish, and its calm, non-aggressive temperament makes it one of the best options for adding safe, natural schooling movement to a reef display without the territorial issues common in many other damselfish.

Its affordability, hardiness, and peaceful nature have made it a mainstay starter fish for countless reef tanks, and it remains a great choice even for experienced keepers wanting reliable, attractive movement in the display.

Compatibility

Green Chromis are peaceful and fully reef safe, ignoring corals and invertebrates entirely. They do best kept in a group of at least five or six individuals, showing natural schooling behaviour and reduced individual aggression compared to being kept singly or in pairs.

They mix well with virtually all peaceful to semi-aggressive community fish and rarely cause problems in a mixed reef tank.

Health & quarantine

This is one of the hardiest and most forgiving reef fish available, tolerating a wide range of conditions and acclimating quickly with minimal issues. A standard quarantine period of two to four weeks is still recommended good practice, though this species is generally low-risk during acclimation.

Frequently asked questions

How many Green Chromis should I keep together?
At least five or six for natural schooling behaviour and reduced individual aggression.
Is the Green Chromis reef safe?
Yes, fully reef safe with corals and invertebrates.
Is the Green Chromis a good beginner fish?
Yes, it's one of the hardiest and most forgiving reef fish available, making it an excellent choice for new keepers.
What tank size suits a group of Green Chromis?
150 litres is a reasonable minimum for a small group, with more room helpful for larger schools.
Why do some of my Green Chromis show aggression?
This is rare but can happen in too-small groups or tanks; keeping a larger school (5+) generally spreads out any aggression and reduces the impact on individuals.
