Aurulentus Anthias

Overview

The Aurulentus Anthias is a deepwater anthias species with a golden-orange body and fine, delicate finnage, less commonly seen in the trade than shallow-reef anthias due to its more specialised collection depth. As with other deepwater anthias, it can face greater decompression-related stress during collection, which affects its initial hardiness compared to more common shallow-water species.

It shares the general planktivorous feeding habits typical of anthias but tends to be more reclusive and slower to settle into a new tank, often favouring dim, sheltered areas until it feels secure.

Given its deepwater origin, it does best in a stable, mature tank with subdued lighting and plenty of structure to retreat to, making it a species best suited to experienced anthias keepers.

Compatibility

Aurulentus Anthias are peaceful and reef safe, ignoring corals and invertebrates entirely. They can be kept singly or, where sourcing allows, in a small group, though consistent group availability is less reliable than for more common anthias species.

Avoid pairing with boisterous or fast-feeding tankmates that could outcompete this more retiring species for food.

Health & quarantine

This species carries elevated risk due to its deepwater collection origin, and buyers should specifically ask suppliers about decompression handling and the fish's feeding status before purchase. A minimum four-week quarantine with careful feeding monitoring is strongly recommended, and new arrivals should be watched closely in the first week to confirm they are eating.
