Overview

The Tuxedo Urchin (Mespilia globulus) is a unique and eye-catching urchin, often recognised for its vibrant, colourful appearance. It has a striking black body adorned with patches of yellow and white spines, giving it a tuxedo-like look, hence the name. These urchins are highly beneficial in a reef aquarium, as they play a significant role in algae control. They are peaceful creatures and thrive in well-established aquariums with plenty of rockwork.

Behaviour and Habitat

The Tuxedo Urchin is a peaceful, slow-moving creature that spends much of its time grazing on algae. It is known for its interesting behaviour of collecting and carrying around pieces of coral, shells, and other debris, which it attaches to its spines for camouflage and protection. This behaviour makes it one of the more distinctive and entertaining members of the urchin family.

In the wild, the Tuxedo Urchin inhabits rocky reefs where it can graze on algae and hide in crevices. In the aquarium, it will do best in a tank with plenty of live rock and access to algae to feed on.

Tank Requirements

A minimum tank size of 100 litres is recommended to ensure ample space for grazing and movement.

  • Aquascape: Include live rock or coral rubble to provide both food and hiding spots.
  • Substrate: A sandy or rubble substrate is ideal for these urchins.
  • Secure Lid: While the Tuxedo Urchin is not a strong jumper, a secure lid is advisable to prevent any accidents if startled.

Diet

The Tuxedo Urchin is primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae in the aquarium. To ensure it gets enough food:

  • Algae: They will graze on naturally occurring algae in the tank.
  • Supplements: Provide additional algae-based foods, such as dried seaweed (nori).
  • Occasional Feedings: Offer algae wafers or other plant-based supplements as needed.

Reef Compatibility

The Tuxedo Urchin is reef-safe and does not pose a threat to corals or invertebrates. It is an excellent algae eater and will help to keep the tank clean and free from unwanted algae growth. However, caution is advised when introducing it into tanks with delicate or slow-growing corals, as the urchin may accidentally disturb them while foraging.

Compatibility

This species is compatible with most peaceful tank mates, including other invertebrates, fish, and corals. However, as it is a slow-moving species, it is best to avoid placing it with more active or aggressive tank mates that may disturb it.

Care Tips
  • Maintain good water quality with stable parameters.
  • Provide plenty of algae and hiding spots for the urchin to thrive.
  • Keep an eye on the urchin’s activity, as it may occasionally dislodge small corals or other delicate tank inhabitants when moving.
  • Regularly check for algae to ensure the urchin is being properly fed.

Final Thoughts

The Tuxedo Urchin is an attractive and useful addition to a reef aquarium. Its peaceful nature, combined with its impressive algae-eating abilities, makes it an excellent choice for aquarists looking to maintain a healthy, clean tank. With its colourful spines and unique behaviour, it also adds an extra layer of interest to the aquarium, making it a rewarding species to care for.
