Overview
The Mini Maxi Anemone (Stichodactyla tapetum) is a genuinely approachable carpet-style anemone, offering the striking rainbow of colours found in its larger relatives while staying compact and manageable in a nano or standard reef tank. It's widely considered one of the best beginner anemones in the hobby.
Role in the tank
Unlike its larger carpet anemone cousins, the Mini Maxi doesn't typically host clownfish, though anemone shrimp and porcelain crabs are sometimes seen sheltering among its tentacles. Its role is primarily as a small, colourful, low-maintenance living centrepiece rather than a genuine clownfish host.
Care
Drip acclimate slowly, and turn off flow makers briefly while it settles, since it's most vulnerable to being tossed around before properly attaching. Once it finds a spot it likes on rock or glass, it typically stays put with minimal further wandering.
Compatibility
Generally peaceful, though it carries a genuinely potent sting for its small size and will happily take advantage of sick or weak tankmates that drift too close.
- Keep a reasonable distance from corals it could sting
- Use caution with small, slow-moving fish or shrimp
Care tips
- Cover pump and powerhead intakes before introducing it, as with any anemone
- Provide strong lighting and good water flow for the best long-term colour and health
- Feed meaty foods like mysis or brine shrimp roughly once a week
- Handle with care — its sting is more potent than its small size might suggest
