Overview
The Sea Urchin is a spiny, grazing invertebrate valued in the reef hobby for its appetite for algae, helping keep rockwork and glass cleaner as part of a broader clean-up crew.
Its distinctive spiny appearance and constant grazing activity make it an interesting, functional addition to a reef display.
Role in the tank
It grazes on algae growing on rock and glass, helping control nuisance algae growth as part of your tank's overall clean-up crew.
Care
Drip-acclimate slowly, as urchins are sensitive to sudden changes in salinity and water quality. A stable, mature tank with established algae growth gives it the best start.
Compatibility
Generally peaceful, though its spines mean some caution is needed during maintenance and around delicate corals.
- Safe with most fish and corals
- Take care during tank maintenance to avoid handling it directly
- Avoid housing with fish known to nip at urchins
Care tips
- Drip-acclimate over an extended period rather than a quick float-and-release
- Ensure sufficient algae growth is present to sustain it, or supplement feeding if needed
- Handle rockwork carefully during maintenance to avoid dislodging or injuring it
- Keep water parameters stable for the best long-term health
