Sea Cucumber
Open Mon–Sat 10am–6pm · Sun 1pm–6pm. Usually ready the same day.
- Kept in our system until you collect
Overview
The Sea Cucumber is a substrate-dwelling invertebrate valued for its role in processing detritus and organic matter within the sand bed.
It's a quiet, unassuming addition that works away in the background, helping keep the substrate cleaner over time.
Role in the tank
It sifts through sand and detritus, consuming organic matter and helping to aerate and clean the substrate as it moves.
Care
Drip-acclimate slowly, as sea cucumbers are sensitive to sudden changes in salinity and water quality. A stable, mature tank with an established sand bed gives it the best chance of settling in and thriving.
Compatibility
Generally peaceful and reef safe, though care should be taken as some species can release toxins if stressed or dying.
- Safe with most fish, corals, and other invertebrates
- Avoid housing with aggressive tank mates that could stress it
Care tips
- Drip-acclimate over an extended period rather than a quick float-and-release
- Ensure a mature sand bed for it to work through
- Avoid unnecessary handling or disturbance once placed
- Maintain stable water quality, as sensitivity to poor conditions is a key risk factor
