Overview
The Sea Apple is a striking, colourful sea cucumber species that adds real visual interest to a reef tank, standing out from typical clean-up crew inverts thanks to its vivid colouration and unusual shape.
It's a fascinating addition for keepers wanting something a bit different, though it comes with some important care considerations worth understanding before adding one.
Role in the tank
Like other sea cucumbers, it feeds on detritus and organic matter in the substrate and water column, helping with general tank cleanliness — though it's kept as much for its appearance as its clean-up function.
Care
Drip-acclimate slowly and carefully, as sea cucumbers are highly sensitive to water quality and salinity shifts. A stable, well-established tank with good water quality is essential, as stressed sea cucumbers can release toxins that affect other tank inhabitants.
Compatibility
Generally peaceful, but care around handling and stress is important given the toxin risk if it's stressed or dies.
- Best suited to experienced keepers in stable, mature systems
- Avoid housing with aggressive tank mates that could stress it
- Take care during any tank maintenance to avoid disturbing it unnecessarily
Care tips
- Drip-acclimate over an extended period rather than a quick float-and-release
- Ensure excellent water quality and stability before adding
- Avoid unnecessary handling or disturbance once placed
- Have a plan for prompt removal if it appears stressed or unwell, given the toxin risk
