Overview
The Porcelain Crab is a small, peaceful filter-feeding crab that's a favourite among reef keepers for its unique feeding behaviour and its role as a gentle, reef-safe addition to the clean-up crew.
Unlike most hermit or clean-up crabs, it doesn't scavenge on the substrate — instead it uses fan-like appendages to filter fine particulate matter straight out of the water column.
Role in the tank
It helps polish the water by capturing suspended fine particles and detritus, complementing (rather than replacing) other clean-up crew members that handle algae and leftover food on the substrate and rockwork.
Care
Drip-acclimate slowly, as with any invertebrate, since crabs are especially sensitive to sudden shifts in salinity and other water parameters. Stable, mature water conditions give it the best chance of settling in well.
Compatibility
Peaceful and reef safe, making it a great fit for most community reef tanks.
- Safe with corals, fish, and most other invertebrates
- Avoid housing with larger predatory fish or crustaceans that may see it as food
Care tips
- Drip-acclimate over an extended period rather than a quick float-and-release
- Provide good water flow so it has access to suspended particulate matter to feed on
- Give it rockwork with crevices to retreat into if it feels threatened
- Avoid keeping with aggressive tank mates that may harass or prey on it
