Overview
The Maxima Clam (Tridacna maxima) is one of the most widely recognised giant clam species in the hobby, prized for its brilliantly patterned mantle in shades of blue, green, gold and turquoise. This is a genuine living invertebrate rather than a coral, and a long-lived centrepiece for a stable, well-lit reef.
Role in the tank
Maxima Clams are filter feeders that constantly process the water column for fine particulates, contributing modestly to water clarity. Their real appeal, though, is visual — a healthy, well-placed Maxima with a fully extended, vividly coloured mantle is one of the most striking living displays a reef tank can offer.
Care
Drip acclimate slowly, as with any invertebrate, and provide intense lighting from day one, gradually building up if the clam is smaller or hasn't been under strong light previously. Maxima Clams attach to hard substrate with byssal threads within a day or two of introduction, so treat their initial placement as permanent — moving an attached clam risks serious damage to its foot.
Compatibility
Peaceful and non-aggressive, though vulnerable to certain fish that pick at clam mantles.
- Avoid housing with angelfish, butterflyfish, or other species known to nip at clam mantles
- Compatible with most reef-safe fish, shrimp and snails
Care tips
- Place on stable rockwork rather than sand, since this species naturally attaches to hard substrate
- Provide intense lighting, acclimating gradually if the clam is smaller or new to strong light
- Maintain stable, elevated calcium, alkalinity and magnesium to support its ongoing shell growth
- Avoid strong, direct flow that causes the mantle to flap excessively — moderate, steady flow is best
