Overview

The Marble Shrimp (Saron marmoratus), also known as the Saron or Monkey Shrimp, is a genuinely striking invertebrate with an intricate marbled pattern of brown, green and white by day, shifting to a deep red at night. Its unusual look and nocturnal habits make it a fascinating, if less commonly seen, addition to the tank.

Role in the tank

Marble Shrimp are omnivorous scavengers that pick through the substrate and rockwork for leftover food and detritus, contributing modestly to overall cleanup. That said, they're worth adding for their character as much as their utility — this is genuinely one of the more visually interesting shrimp available, particularly under moonlighting.

Care

Drip acclimate slowly, as shrimp are particularly sensitive to sudden changes in salinity and water chemistry. Provide plenty of rockwork with caves and crevices for daytime hiding, since this species is naturally shy and nocturnal — it will typically become bolder and more visible during the day once settled.

Compatibility

Generally peaceful, though it's worth noting this species isn't universally considered reef-safe — some individuals have been reported picking at zoanthids, soft corals and other sessile invertebrates.

  • Best kept singly or as a mated pair to avoid territorial conflict between individuals
  • Keep an eye on interactions with zoanthids, soft corals or other colonial polyps if you're cautious about compatibility
Care tips
  • Never expose to copper-based medications, which are lethal to shrimp even in trace amounts
  • Feed at night when it's naturally most active, offering a variety of meaty foods
  • Provide plenty of hiding spots, especially important during moulting when it's temporarily vulnerable
  • Maintain stable calcium, alkalinity and iodine levels to support healthy moulting
