Overview
Live Rock is the foundation of any reef aquascape — a naturally porous rock that provides both the physical structure for your reef and the biological filtration that keeps ammonia and nitrite in check. Its surface and interior host colonies of beneficial bacteria that process fish waste and other organic matter into less harmful compounds.
Beyond its filtration role, it's also where corals, invertebrates and fish will spend most of their time — providing hiding spots, grazing surfaces and mounting points throughout your tank.
Using it in your tank
Live rock forms the backbone of your aquascape, so plan your structure with flow, coral placement and maintenance access in mind before committing to a final arrangement. Depending on how it's sourced, rock may need a curing period to allow any die-off from transport to fully break down before you add sensitive livestock — rinse thoroughly and monitor ammonia during this process if curing is required.
Tips
- Build your aquascape with stability in mind, using wider bases and secure stacking rather than precarious overhangs
- Leave gaps for flow through the structure rather than packing rock tightly together
- Monitor water parameters closely for the first few weeks if the rock is freshly cured
- Handle carefully during placement, since rock can be surprisingly heavy and awkward once wet
