Overview

The Haddoni Anemone (Stichodactyla haddoni) is another of the true carpet anemones — a large, flattened animal with short, bead-like tentacles that can spread impressively across a sandy substrate. Like its close relatives, it's a popular natural host for a range of clownfish species.

We want to be upfront that this is a genuinely demanding invertebrate that asks a lot of the tank around it, and it's best suited to an experienced reef keeper with a stable, mature system.

Role in the tank

The Haddoni doesn't clean up detritus or algae — its role is as a living centrepiece and clownfish host. It typically buries its foot in sand and can shift position while settling in, eventually anchoring itself firmly once it finds a spot it likes.

Care

Drip acclimate slowly, as with any anemone, and only introduce it to a genuinely mature, established tank. Provide an area with both sandy and rocky sections so it can choose its preferred spot, and reduce flow initially to help it settle and bury its foot before returning to normal flow.

Compatibility

Can host a range of clownfish species, but has a genuinely potent sting and isn't compatible with other anemones nearby.

  • Keep well clear of other anemones and corals it could sting or overwhelm
  • Use caution with small fish it may be capable of catching
Care tips
  • Cover all pump and powerhead intakes before introducing it — anemones are frequently lost this way
  • Handle with care; its sting is genuinely potent and can affect sensitive skin
  • Feed regularly with quality meaty foods, offered weekly or more often to support long-term health
  • Give it both sand and rock options early on so it can settle where it's most comfortable
