Overview
The Green BTA is a vibrant green colour form of the bubble tip anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor), one of the most popular clownfish-hosting anemones in the hobby. This is a genuine invertebrate and a rewarding, if demanding, centrepiece for a mature reef tank.
Role in the tank
Bubble tip anemones are best known for their symbiotic relationship with clownfish, which will often host in the anemone's tentacles for shelter and protection, in turn helping feed and defend it. Beyond that relationship, the anemone contributes little in the way of cleanup — its role is purely as a striking, living centrepiece.
Care
Drip acclimate slowly and only introduce a BTA to a mature, well-established tank — ideally one running for at least six months with consistent coralline algae growth as a sign of real stability. These anemones are mobile and will relocate themselves until they find a spot with the light and flow they prefer, so patience during the settling-in period is essential.
Compatibility
Semi-aggressive, with a genuine sting that can affect corals and slow-moving tankmates it comes into contact with.
- Excellent host for many clownfish species, though hosting isn't guaranteed
- Keep well clear of corals and any equipment intakes it could be drawn into
Care tips
- Cover all powerhead and pump intakes before adding — anemones are frequently drawn in and killed this way
- Provide strong lighting and moderate flow, and allow it to relocate itself rather than forcing a fixed position
- Feed small pieces of meaty food once or twice a week to support colour and health
- Avoid disturbing it once settled, as anemones generally do best left in place long-term
