Overview

The Gigantea Anemone (Stichodactyla gigantea) is one of the true carpet anemones — a broad, flattened animal covered in short, densely packed tentacles that can genuinely fill out a large section of rockwork or sand. It's prized as one of the best natural hosts for clownfish, with a long list of species known to settle happily into its tentacles.

We want to be upfront that this is a genuinely demanding invertebrate. It's beautiful and rewarding when it thrives, but it asks a lot from the tank around it.

Role in the tank

The Gigantea doesn't clean up detritus or algae — its role is as a living centrepiece and clownfish host. In the wild it settles into sand or rubble and rarely moves once established, using its short, extremely sticky tentacles to capture prey directly from the water column and passing fish.

Care

Drip acclimate slowly, as with any anemone, and only introduce it to a genuinely mature, stable tank. It's an aggressive eater capable of taking fish, so regular feeding of quality meaty foods helps keep it satisfied and reduces the temptation to prey on tankmates. Once settled it tends to stay put, so choose its spot carefully from the start.

Compatibility

Can host a wide range of clownfish species, but has a genuinely potent sting and isn't compatible with other anemones nearby.

  • Keep well clear of other anemones and corals it could sting or overwhelm
  • Use caution with small fish or shrimp, which it may capture and consume
Care tips
  • Cover all pump and powerhead intakes before introducing it — anemones are frequently lost this way
  • Handle with care; its sting can cause a genuine reaction on sensitive skin
  • Feed regularly with quality meaty foods to support long-term health
  • Choose its placement thoughtfully, since it typically won't relocate once settled
