It has a personable character and can be a great addition to reef aquariums, though care should be taken to avoid housing it with small shrimp, as it may prey on them. A 100-litre or larger aquarium is necessary, providing plenty of live rock for structure and hiding spots. The Flame Hawkfish is generally peaceful but can pose a risk to smaller bottom-dwelling gobies and blennies. This fish often spends its time perched on rocks, waiting for food to pass by. The Flame Hawkfish diet should include a variety of marine meats and frozen preparations.
