Overview

Feather stars are genuinely striking animals — feathery, multi-armed crinoids that sway and filter-feed with an almost plant-like grace. We think it's only fair to be upfront: this is one of the most difficult invertebrates in the hobby to keep long-term, and it's not a purchase to make on impulse.

Role in the tank

Feather stars are obligate suspension feeders, meaning they rely entirely on very fine plankton particles suspended in the water column rather than eating anything solid off the substrate. They don't clean up detritus or algae, and in fact require constant, dedicated feeding themselves to survive.

Care

Drip acclimation slowly and carefully, as these animals are highly sensitive to any sudden change in water chemistry. Once in the tank, success depends almost entirely on being able to provide very fine, appropriately sized planktonic food multiple times a day, every day, indefinitely — something most home aquariums simply aren't set up to sustain.

Compatibility

Generally considered reef-safe in terms of not harming other tank inhabitants, but genuinely delicate around anything that might pick at its arms.

  • Avoid housing with fish or invertebrates known to nip at feathery or exposed appendages
  • Best kept in a dedicated, mature system set up specifically to support filter feeders
Care tips
  • Be realistic about feeding commitment before purchase — this isn't an animal that can be fed occasionally and left alone
  • Target feed fine planktonic foods directly onto the arms multiple times daily
  • Watch closely for arm loss, which is often an early sign of stress or inadequate nutrition
  • Consider this animal only for an established, non-photosynthetic-leaning system with a genuine feeding routine already in place
