Scientific Name: Pomacanthus imperator (Emperor Angelfish) Care Level: Moderate Temperament: Semi-aggressive Colour Form: Black, Blue, White, Yellow Diet: Omnivore Reef Compatible: With caution Water Conditions: 22-26°C, dKH 6-12, pH 7.8-8.4, sg 1.020-1.025 Max. Size: 38 cm Family: Pomacanthidae Minimum Tank Size: 800 litres Overview The adult Emperor Angelfish, also known as the Imperator Angelfish, displays bold horizontal blue and yellow stripes on its body, ending with a bright yellow-to-orange caudal fin. It has a striking blue-black mask covering the eyes and a vertical band of the same colour running from the pectoral fin. This band is outlined with sapphire blue and bright yellow at the back. The mouth is white. Juvenile Emperor Angelfish are black with circular white and blue stripes beginning at the tail. In captivity, the vivid coloration of adults may not be as brilliant, and the fish will change in pattern and coloration as it matures from juvenile to adult. The Emperor Angelfish requires an 800-litre or larger tank with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. It also needs a lot of rockwork and deep caves to feel secure. While it may nip at stony and soft corals, as well as clam mantles, it can sometimes be housed with small-polyped stony corals and noxious soft corals. Feed the Emperor Angelfish a varied diet that includes Spirulina, marine algae, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis or frozen shrimp, and other meaty foods.
