Overview
Dragon's Breath is one of the more striking macroalgae available to reef keepers — a red algae with broad, ribbon-like fronds and forked, flame-coloured tips that stand out whether it's tucked into a refugium or displayed as a feature in its own right.
Role in the tank
Beyond its looks, Dragon's Breath earns its keep as a nutrient exporter, taking up excess nitrates and phosphates from the water as it grows. Harvesting portions of it periodically removes those nutrients from the system for good, making it a genuinely useful addition to a refugium's natural filtration.
Care
As with any live macroalgae, gentle acclimation to your tank's water helps it settle in without unnecessary stress. Once established, it's relatively easy to keep, though it benefits from consistent water flow and light to maintain its colour and prevent the fronds from thinning.
Compatibility
Generally safe with corals and inverts, but worth a little caution around grazing fish.
- Some tangs, rabbitfish and other herbivores will happily eat it, so a refugium away from grazers is often the safest home
- Compatible with most reef-safe fish and invertebrates
Care tips
- Give it moderate to high lighting with a good amount of blue spectrum to support its red pigmentation
- Provide steady water flow to keep nutrients circulating past the fronds and prevent detritus settling on them
- Harvest portions regularly rather than letting it overgrow, both for nutrient export and to keep the colony healthy
- If displaying it in the main tank, keep it away from fish that are likely to graze on it
