Overview
The Crocea Clam is the smallest of the Tridacna giant clams commonly kept in the hobby, prized for its intensely coloured, iridescent mantle in shades of blue, green and gold. It's a striking centrepiece for any reef tank with the right light to support it.
Role in the tank
Beyond its visual appeal, this clam contributes to water quality by filtering fine particulates from the water column as it feeds. Most of its energy, however, comes from the light-driven photosynthesis of the zooxanthellae living in its mantle tissue, rather than from filter feeding alone.
Care
Slow drip acclimation is essential for this species, giving it time to adjust to your tank's salinity and parameters without stress. Once settled, Crocea Clams are relatively hardy provided their two non-negotiable needs are met: strong lighting and a secure, stable attachment point.
Compatibility
Considered reef-safe and peaceful, but a few practical considerations apply.
- Avoid housing with fish known to nip at clam mantles, such as certain butterflyfish or triggers
- Compatible with most peaceful reef fish, corals and other invertebrates
Care tips
- Place on secure rockwork rather than sand — this species naturally attaches to rock and bores in slightly using its byssal gland
- Provide strong, high-intensity lighting; insufficient light is the most common reason these clams decline over time
- Acclimate to bright lighting gradually if moving from a lower-light system, to avoid light shock
- Inspect the mantle regularly for even colouration and no bleached patches, which can signal a lighting or water quality issue
