Overview

The Bubble Tip Anemone is one of the most iconic animals in the hobby, famous for its plump, grape-like tentacle tips and its natural partnership with clownfish. The Candy Apple is a striking colour form of this species, bringing bold, vivid colouration to what's already one of the more rewarding anemones to keep.

It's a genuine centrepiece animal, but one that needs a mature, stable tank behind it rather than a freshly cycled system.

Role in the tank

BTAs host a wide range of clownfish species, forming a true symbiotic relationship - the clownfish gets shelter and protection, while the anemone benefits from the food scraps and waste the fish brings back to it. Like corals, it also carries photosynthetic zooxanthellae, drawing energy from light as well as direct feeding.

Care

Drip acclimate slowly and carefully, as with all anemones. A BTA should only go into a tank that's been running for at least six months, with visible coralline growth and genuinely stable calcium, alkalinity and magnesium - it doesn't tolerate the instability of a new system well. Expect it to relocate itself around the rockwork in the first few weeks until it settles somewhere it's happy.

Compatibility
  • A strong host for many clownfish species, and often forms a relationship with cleaner shrimp too
  • Can sting and damage corals or slower fish it comes into contact with as it moves, and can be drawn into powerheads or pump intakes - protect these with guards
Care tips
  • Only add to a mature, well-established tank with stable parameters
  • Guard all powerhead and pump intakes before introducing it
  • Feed small pieces of meaty food such as mysis, shrimp or chopped seafood once or twice a week
  • Give it room to move and settle - avoid forcing it into a fixed position early on
