Overview

The Bumblebee Shrimp is a genuine curiosity for the nano reef crowd - tiny, boldly striped, and shy enough that spotting one going about its business feels like a small reward. At barely 2.5cm fully grown, it's an easy fit for even the smallest reef systems.

Its unusual, almost headless appearance and bumblebee-style black and white or yellow banding make it a fun, low-impact addition rather than a showpiece animal.

Role in the tank

Bumblebee Shrimp are opportunistic scavengers that pick over rockwork for food, and are notably known to feed on the tube feet of starfish, urchins and other echinoderms in the wild - though they don't rely on this and take readily to standard meaty aquarium foods.

Care

Drip acclimate slowly and carefully - this species is particularly sensitive to sudden changes in salinity and temperature. It doesn't have unusual water quality demands beyond what any healthy reef tank should already provide, but it is sensitive to copper and elevated nitrates, and needs correct iodine levels to support successful moulting.

Compatibility
  • Peaceful and safe with corals and most reef fish
  • Best kept alone or as a mated pair rather than with other shrimp species
  • Avoid housing with starfish, urchins or sea cucumbers if you want to protect them, and steer clear of larger predatory fish like triggers, wrasses, hawkfish or angelfish
Care tips
  • Drip acclimate over an extended period given this species' sensitivity to water changes
  • Provide plenty of live rock and hiding spots, since it's naturally shy
  • Feed small pieces of meaty food regularly rather than relying on it to find enough on its own
  • Avoid copper-based medications entirely, as they are highly toxic to this species
