Size: 30 cm Family: Acanthuridae Minimum Tank Size: 600 litres Overview: The Blue Tang, also known as the Palette Surgeonfish, Pacific Blue Tang, Hepatus Tang, or Regal Tang, is a stunning addition to large marine aquariums. Its vibrant electric blue body is adorned with striking black markings that form a unique pattern reminiscent of a painter's palette, enhancing its visual appeal. Blue Tangs are best suited for experienced marine aquarists and require a spacious tank, at least 5 feet in length (600 litres or more). This species is native to Indo-Pacific reefs and enjoys having ample hiding spots among live rock, as well as plenty of space to swim. While generally peaceful with most tankmates, Blue Tangs can be aggressive toward other members of their own species. To house multiple Blue Tangs, introduce all of them simultaneously into a large tank. Although Blue Tangs will consume meaty foods, their diet should be primarily herbivorous, including marine-based seaweed and algae. Regular feeding of dried seaweed, such as Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad, or Ocean Nutrition, tied to a rock or placed in a veggie clip, is crucial. Aim to feed at least three times a week to support their health and reduce aggression. Proper care requires attention to water quality and diet, as Blue Tangs are prone to lateral line disease, fin erosion, Ich, and other skin parasites. Maintaining optimal water conditions and a varied, nutritious diet rich in marine vegetables is essential for their well-being.
