Overview
Biscuit starfish are prized for their distinctive scale-like patterning and compact, cushion-shaped body - a real standout compared to the more common brittle stars and serpent stars in the trade. Native to Australian waters, they're a naturally local species that suits a tank wanting a bit of visual interest low in the aquascape.
They're generally considered one of the more manageable starfish for captive care, though like all sea stars they're sensitive to water quality and shouldn't be added to a brand new, uncycled tank.
Role in the tank
Biscuit starfish are omnivorous grazers, working over rock and substrate for detritus, algae and biofilm as they move. They're a genuinely useful addition to a clean-up crew rather than a purely ornamental piece, helping keep surfaces tidy between manual cleaning.
Care
Drip acclimate slowly - starfish in general are highly sensitive to sudden changes in salinity and temperature, more so than most fish or hardy invertebrates. They need a mature, stable tank with consistent water quality rather than a freshly cycled system, since they don't tolerate swings in water chemistry well.
Compatibility
- Generally safe with peaceful reef fish such as clownfish, gobies and tangs, which tend to ignore them
- Avoid housing with large wrasses, triggerfish or other species known to pick at slow-moving invertebrates
Care tips
- Drip acclimate over an extended period rather than a quick float-and-release
- Introduce only to an established, mature tank with stable parameters
- Supplement their natural grazing with occasional algae wafers if your tank doesn't have abundant natural biofilm
- Handle as little as possible - starfish can be easily damaged by rough handling out of water
