It has a base colour of white with two broad black stripes, yellow soft dorsal and caudal fins, and a black pelvic fin. Notable black markings appear above the eyes and on the top of the snout. While it closely resembles the Black & White Heniochus Butterflyfish (Heniochus acuminatus), it can be identified by its rounder body and less protruding snout. In an aquarium of 450 litres or more, the Schooling Bannerfish thrives alongside other peaceful fish and can be kept with others of its own species, provided all are introduced to the tank at the same time. When swimming, its elongated dorsal filament moves gracefully, resembling a banner in the water.
