Overview

The Flagfin Angel, also called the Three-spot Angelfish, is a bright yellow angelfish with a distinctive blue-outlined mouth and small dark spots on the forehead, making it an eye-catching mid-to-large angelfish for a spacious tank. It's a genuine large angel and needs considerable swimming room and an established, mature system to do well.

It can be a selective feeder in the first weeks after import, similar to some other Apolemichthys species, so buying from a supplier who has confirmed the fish is already eating confidently is important for a smooth transition.

Given the right space, diet, and patience during acclimation, it's a hardy, long-lived, and visually striking centrepiece fish, but it's not a good match for a coral-focused reef display.

Compatibility

Flagfin Angels can be territorial toward other large angelfish and are best kept as the only angel in the tank, added with care around stocking order in a large system. They generally coexist with robust tangs, wrasses, and other large community fish.

This species is not reef safe — it will reliably pick at sponges, LPS corals, soft corals, and clam mantles, making it unsuitable for reef tanks with valuable coral.

Health & quarantine

A minimum four-to-six-week quarantine with careful feeding trials is strongly recommended, since this species can be selective about food in the initial weeks after arrival. Buying only from a supplier who has confirmed the fish is already eating well significantly reduces the risk of prolonged feeding issues and subsequent decline.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Flagfin Angel reef safe?
No, it will reliably pick at sponges, LPS corals, soft corals and clam mantles, making it unsuitable for reef tanks.
How big does a Flagfin Angel get?
Up to around 25cm, requiring a large, mature tank.
Is the Flagfin Angel a difficult feeder?
It can be selective in the first weeks after import, so confirming the fish is already eating well before purchase is important.
Can I keep a Flagfin Angel with other angelfish?
Only in a very large tank with careful stocking order — it will generally not tolerate another large angel in a modest system.
What tank size does a Flagfin Angel need?
At least 600 litres given its adult size and swimming requirements.
