Overview
The Clown Trigger is one of the most visually striking and sought-after triggerfish, with a dark body covered in large white polka-dots, a bright yellow-orange mouth, and bold facial patterning that makes it instantly recognisable. It grows into a genuinely large, powerful fish and needs a substantial, dedicated tank to match its adult size and appetite.
It's an intelligent, characterful fish with a strong personality — many keepers describe them as almost dog-like in how they recognise and interact with their owner — but this same intelligence and boldness comes with a well-earned reputation for aggression as it matures, both toward tankmates and occasionally toward the keeper during tank maintenance.
This is a fish for experienced keepers with a large, dedicated fish-only or FOWLR system, not a reef tank, and buyers should be prepared for its considerable adult size, appetite, and assertive temperament.
Compatibility
Clown Triggers are aggressive, particularly as they mature, and are best kept with similarly robust, large fish able to hold their own, such as large tangs, other triggers (with caution), or large angelfish in a very big system. They should not be kept with small, passive fish, which they will often harass or eat.
This species is not reef safe — it will eat ornamental invertebrates, ornamental shrimp, snails, and ornamental crustaceans, and can also damage or rearrange coral and rockwork while foraging or excavating a preferred territory.
Health & quarantine
A minimum four-week quarantine is recommended, with attention to its considerable bioload and appetite from an early stage, since this species requires excellent filtration and consistent water quality as it grows. It's generally a hardy, robust fish once established, with most health issues in captivity relating to inadequate tank size or poor water quality rather than disease susceptibility.
