Overview

The Bluespot Butterfly is a small, attractive butterflyfish with a yellow body, a distinctive blue-black spot near the dorsal fin, and the classic dark eye-band typical of the group. It's one of the more reef-tolerant butterflyfish available, though as with most Chaetodon species, individual behaviour toward coral can vary.

Its manageable adult size and peaceful nature make it a reasonable choice for keepers wanting butterflyfish colour and personality without the more demanding size and reef risk of larger species in the family.

It does best in an established tank with plenty of live rock to graze and explore, and benefits from a varied diet to maintain long-term condition.

Compatibility

Bluespot Butterflies are peaceful toward other fish and generally coexist well with a wide range of community tankmates, including tangs, wrasses, and gobies. They can occasionally show mild territoriality toward other butterflyfish of similar size and shape.

Reef compatibility is inconsistent — some individuals leave coral alone entirely, while others will nip at LPS polyps, soft corals, or clam mantles, so this species is rated reef safe with caution rather than fully safe.

Health & quarantine

As with most butterflyfish, a minimum four-week quarantine is recommended, with attention to appetite in the first week since some individuals can be slow to accept prepared foods after import. A varied, high-quality diet supports long-term health and helps maintain the vivid colouration this species is known for.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Bluespot Butterfly reef safe?
Rated reef safe with caution — some individuals leave coral alone entirely while others will nip at LPS polyps, soft corals or clam mantles.
How big does a Bluespot Butterfly get?
Around 12cm, a manageable size compared to many larger butterflyfish species.
Is the Bluespot Butterfly a good first butterflyfish?
It's a reasonable option given its manageable size and generally peaceful temperament, though reef risk should still be considered.
What tank size does a Bluespot Butterfly need?
At least 300 litres given its need for swimming space and grazing area.
Can I keep two Bluespot Butterflies together?
Possible in a larger tank, though care should be taken as similarly sized butterflyfish can show mild territorial disputes.
