Overview

The Blue Midas Blenny is a striking colour variant of the standard Midas Blenny, with a vivid blue body rather than the more commonly seen golden-yellow form. Unlike many blennies that stay close to rock and rarely venture into open water, the Midas Blenny is unusually active and swims freely throughout the tank, more closely resembling a small wrasse in behaviour.

It's a hardy, adaptable omnivore that grazes algae as well as accepting meaty foods, giving it a broader diet than many strictly herbivorous blennies.

Its active, outgoing nature and full reef safety make it an interesting alternative to more sedentary blenny species, though it can be a little territorial as it settles into a tank.

Compatibility

Blue Midas Blennies can show mild to moderate territorial aggression, particularly toward other blennies or similarly shaped fish, so introducing it with care in a community setting is worthwhile. They are generally fine with unrelated tankmates and fully reef safe with corals and invertebrates.

Given their more active swimming style, they can sometimes be mistaken for a small wrasse by other fish, occasionally leading to unexpected territorial responses from true wrasses.

Health & quarantine

This is a hardy, adaptable species with few chronic health issues, though as with all blennies it should not be treated with copper-based medications due to its lack of scales. A standard quarantine period of two to four weeks is recommended, and it generally acclimates and feeds well without major issues.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Blue Midas Blenny swim so much compared to other blennies?
This is normal — Midas Blennies are unusually active swimmers that move freely through open water, more like a small wrasse than a typical rock-dwelling blenny.
Is the Blue Midas Blenny reef safe?
Yes, fully reef safe with corals and invertebrates.
What does a Blue Midas Blenny eat?
It's an omnivore, grazing algae as well as readily accepting meaty foods like mysis and brine shrimp.
Is the Blue Midas Blenny aggressive?
It can show mild to moderate territorial aggression, particularly toward other blennies, so care is needed with similar tankmates.
What tank size does a Blue Midas Blenny need?
200 litres is a reasonable minimum given its active swimming habits.
