Overview

This SPS Colony (Echinata) is a one-of-one WYSIWYG Acropora echinata piece, fragged in-house, showing the fine branching structure this species is known for.

Being fragged in-house means this piece comes from stock already growing well in local conditions, which can make for a smoother transition than a freshly imported piece.

Behaviour & habitat

Extends fine polyps across its branches during the day to photosynthesise and feed, with growth radiating outward from the base as it establishes on the rockwork.

Tank requirements

Lighting

This piece wants strong, high-intensity lighting — acclimate gradually over 1–2 weeks to avoid bleaching or burning.

Water flow

Strong, turbulent flow suits this species well, helping keep tissue clean and supporting healthy polyp extension.

Placement

Best kept high in the tank, close to the light source, with good flow and clearance from neighbouring branching corals.

Feeding

Primarily photosynthetic, though fine particulate feeding can support extra growth.

  • Fine particulate coral foods
  • Phytoplankton-based foods
Compatibility

Generally peaceful but needs its own space as branches spread.

  • Suits SPS-dominant or mixed reef displays
  • Keep clear of slower-growing or sensitive neighbours it could eventually overgrow
Care tips
  • Acclimate to lighting gradually over 1–2 weeks to avoid bleaching
  • Keep alkalinity, calcium and magnesium stable and in balance for solid growth
  • Ensure strong, consistent flow rather than stagnant zones
  • Watch tissue colour and extension as an early indicator of how well it's settling in
