The Torch Coral (Euphyllia glabrescens) is a striking and popular LPS (large polyp stony) coral that brings movement and vibrant colour to reef aquariums. Native to the Indo-Pacific, the Torch Coral thrives in reef tanks when provided with stable water conditions and proper care.
Behaviour and Habitat
Torch Corals are semi-aggressive and can extend their tentacles several centimetres to sting nearby corals or invertebrates. Place them in an area where they won't come into contact with other coral species. In the wild, they are found in reef slopes and lagoons, often in moderate water movement zones.
They use their tentacles for both defense and capturing prey, but they primarily rely on their symbiotic zooxanthellae algae for sustenance.
Placement and Tank Requirements
Torch Corals prefer moderate lighting and water flow. Avoid strong currents, which can cause their tentacles to retract or become damaged. Ideal placement is mid-level in the aquarium, where they can receive sufficient light and movement.
Provide plenty of space between Torch Corals and other species to prevent stinging incidents. Ensure the tank has stable parameters, as Torch Corals are sensitive to swings in water chemistry.
Diet
Torch Corals are photosynthetic, deriving most of their energy from light. However, they benefit from supplemental feeding, which can promote faster growth and vibrant coloration. Feed them 1-2 times weekly with:
