Overview

Torch Coral is one of the most popular large-polyp stony corals in the hobby, prized for its long, flowing tentacles tipped with a distinctive bulb that catches the light beautifully. Colours range from classic green through to gold and striking blue tips, and colonies build slowly into a captivating cluster of swaying tentacles.

Behaviour and Placement

Torch Coral is semi-aggressive, extending long sweeper tentacles at night that can sting corals placed too closely. Position it with generous clearance on all sides, ideally at the bottom to middle of the tank, where moderate lighting and flow allow the tentacles to sway naturally without being battered.

Feeding

Torch Coral will accept regular target feeding of meaty foods such as mysis or brine shrimp, which supports strong growth and vivid colouration alongside the energy it gains from photosynthesis.

Care Tips

  • Keep water parameters stable, as sudden swings can cause tissue recession.
  • Provide moderate lighting and flow to encourage full tentacle extension.
  • Leave ample space between Torch Coral and its neighbours to prevent stinging.

Compatibility

Torch Coral is reef compatible but should be kept away from more docile species due to its stinging tentacles. It coexists well with other semi-aggressive LPS given sufficient spacing.

Final Thoughts

Torch Coral is a rewarding centrepiece for reef aquarists at almost any experience level, offering constant movement and colour with moderate care requirements — provided it's given the room it needs to spread out.
