Overview

The Favia Coral is a large polyp stony (LPS) coral recognised for its intricate, maze-like patterns and vibrant colours. Native to reef slopes and lagoons in the Indo-Pacific and Australia, this coral is highly adaptable and well-suited to various reef aquariums. Its hardiness and stunning appearance make it a popular choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists.

Behaviour and Habitat

Favia Corals are generally semi-aggressive. They have long sweeper tentacles that extend at night, capable of stinging nearby corals. In their natural habitat, they thrive in areas with moderate water flow and lighting, often found encrusting on rocks or forming dome-like colonies.

Tank Requirements
  • Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal. Excessively high-intensity light can cause bleaching, while low light may hinder growth. LED or T5 systems are suitable.
  • Water Flow: Moderate water flow is recommended to prevent debris accumulation and promote gas exchange without damaging their tissues.
  • Placement: Place them on rock structures or substrates with enough space to prevent contact with other corals due to their aggressive nature.

Diet

Favia Corals rely on symbiotic zooxanthellae for photosynthesis but benefit from supplemental feeding to boost growth and coloration.

Reef Compatibility

Favia Corals are reef-safe but should be placed with caution. Their sweeper tentacles can damage neighbouring corals, so it’s important to maintain sufficient spacing between them and other species.

Compatibility

Favia Corals are compatible with a wide range of peaceful and semi-aggressive tank mates, including:

Care Tips
  • Maintain stable water parameters, with calcium (380-450 ppm), magnesium (1250-1350 ppm), and alkalinity (6-10 dKH) at optimal levels.
  • Ensure moderate water flow and proper spacing from other corals to prevent stinging damage.
  • Clean the coral's surface periodically to remove debris and detritus.
  • Avoid rapid changes in water chemistry, which can stress the coral.

Final Thoughts

Favia Corals are an excellent addition to reef aquariums, offering both beauty and resilience. Their maze-like patterns and vibrant colours make them a striking focal point in any tank. With proper care, stable conditions, and thoughtful placement, Favia Corals can thrive and enhance the aesthetic appeal of your reef setup.
