Overview
Blastomussa Corals are a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral species known for their fleshy polyps, vibrant colours, and peaceful temperament. Found in the shallow lagoons and reef slopes of the Indo-Pacific, including Australia, these corals are a favourite among aquarists due to their relatively easy care and stunning appearance. Blastomussa Corals are well-suited for both beginner and advanced reef keepers, adding a splash of colour and elegance to any reef tank.
Behaviour and Habitat
Blastomussa Corals are peaceful and do not possess aggressive sweeper tentacles, making them an excellent choice for mixed reef aquariums. They extend their fleshy polyps during the day, displaying their full, vibrant colours. In the wild, they are often found in areas with lower light and moderate water flow, nestled among reef structures.
Tank Requirements
- Lighting: Moderate to low lighting is ideal, as excessive intensity can cause bleaching. LED or T5 systems with adjustable intensity are recommended.
- Water Flow: Low to moderate. Strong currents can damage their fleshy polyps.
- Placement: Best placed on a rock ledge or sandy substrate in shaded or low-light areas.
Diet
While Blastomussa Corals rely on their symbiotic zooxanthellae for photosynthesis, they benefit from supplemental feeding to thrive and grow.
- Food Types:
- Mysis shrimp
- Brine shrimp
- Powdered or liquid coral food
- Finely chopped seafood
- Feeding Frequency: Target feed once or twice a week during the evening or when polyps are fully extended.
Reef Compatibility
Blastomussa Corals are fully reef-safe and are excellent additions to mixed reef tanks. They do not pose a threat to other corals or invertebrates, and their peaceful nature allows them to coexist with a variety of coral species.

Care Tips
- Regularly monitor water parameters, especially calcium (380-450 ppm), magnesium (1250-1350 ppm), and alkalinity (6-10 dKH).
- Avoid placing them in direct, high-flow areas to prevent polyp damage.
- Periodically clean their surface to remove detritus or algae buildup.
- Maintain stable water quality and avoid sudden parameter changes.
Final Thoughts
Blastomussa Corals are a fantastic addition to any reef aquarium, offering both beauty and ease of care. Their vibrant, fleshy polyps and peaceful nature make them a favourite for aquarists of all experience levels. With stable conditions, regular feeding, and proper placement, Blastomussa Corals can thrive and become a centrepiece of your reef tank.
