Overview

A new tank, refugium, or frag system often needs somewhere for beneficial bacteria, pods and other microfauna to establish themselves — bare sand and glass just don't offer the surface area or shelter that a thriving reef needs. Coral Rubble gives you exactly that: small, porous pieces of reef substrate that pack a lot of surface area and hiding space into a small footprint.

It's a simple, inexpensive addition, but one that punches well above its price in terms of biological benefit.

Key features
  • Porous structure provides excellent surface area for beneficial bacteria colonisation
  • Creates shelter and grazing habitat for copepods, amphipods and other beneficial microfauna
  • Useful in refugiums, sumps, frag tanks and display aquascapes alike
Who it's for

Ideal for anyone setting up a refugium or pod-breeding area, seeding a new tank's biological filtration, or adding texture and natural habitat to an aquascape.

Setup & tips
  • Rinse thoroughly in saltwater before adding to your system to remove any loose dust or debris
  • Placing a scoop in a refugium gives pod populations somewhere secure to breed away from predatory fish
  • Tuck pieces into aquascape gaps to add natural-looking texture without a large investment in rock
  • Give it time — the real benefit comes as it matures and builds up its own biofilm over the following weeks
