Overview
Small tanks generate the same dissolved organics as big ones, just with far less water to dilute them in — which is exactly why nano reefs need proper skimming, not a scaled-down afterthought. The Comline DOC Skimmer 9001 from Tunze is a genuine plug-and-play protein skimmer purpose-built for nano and small marine systems, pulling proteins, cellulose and other dissolved organics out of the water before they break down and foul it.
It runs on Tunze's "flash skimming" principle: rather than relying on long contact time in a big reaction chamber, it generates a very high volume of extremely fine air bubbles that grab pollutants quickly and efficiently, all in a compact footprint.
Key features
- Flash skimming principle for efficient protein extraction without a bulky reaction chamber
- Very fine bubble generation via Tunze's internal Foamer for high contact efficiency
- Whisper-quiet operation, suited to bedrooms, offices, or anywhere noise matters
- Patented anti-overfoaming system that regulates performance based on water level and organic load
- Magnet holder mount for glass up to 10mm thick, so it can sit in a corner without a sump
- Tool-free collection cup for quick rinse-and-repeat cleaning
Who it's for
Designed for saltwater aquariums roughly 20 to 140 litres, depending on bioload and coral type — softie and LPS-dominant tanks can push toward the upper end, while heavily-stocked SPS systems should size down. A great fit for nano and small reef setups that don't have room for, or don't want the footprint of, a larger external skimmer.
Setup & tips
- Mount it in a corner of the display or sump using the supplied magnet holder — no external pump or plumbing required
- Give it a few days to "break in" and start producing consistent, dark skimmate
- Empty and rinse the collection cup regularly rather than letting it fill and overflow
- If your tank runs a heavier coral or fish load than the base recommendation, size down the expected aquarium volume accordingly rather than pushing the unit past its comfortable range
